How Does Your Practice Compare?

Ever wonder how your practice performance compares to other dental practices around the US?

Benchmarks and industry-wide data can be enormously helpful for practice leaders because they allow the team to see what’s happening outside their office. If practices around the country are able to get certain results, it’s highly likely that it’s possible for your practice as well.

Industry averages and benchmarks should be used to measure current performance, set goals, evaluate progress, and celebrate achievements with your team.

Note: Data below has been collected primarily from Dental Intel. Keep in mind, practices using Dental Intel tend to perform better than other practices due to their access to data. Due to this, the averages listed below may be slightly higher than overall industry averages.

Hygiene Care

Did you know that 75% of restorative production comes from the hygiene department? And, 1/3 of overall practice production should becoming from hygiene services.

Hygiene can (and should) be a strong, profitable part of the business. The most successful practices maximize hygiene and provide patients with more comprehensive care.

See national hygiene statistics below to learn what's possible in hygiene:

Hygiene Case Diagnostic %:

How thoroughly is the hygiene department finding and diagnosing hygiene care in patients? Hygiene Case Diagnostic % measures how often patients are diagnosed with hygiene-related care.

*Many practices neglect hygiene diagnoses because they mistakenly believe these necessary treatments prevent patients from moving forward with needed restorative care. We’ve found that with the right conversations and educational tools, patients move forward with most (if not all) of the care that’s best for them.

Hygiene Case Acceptance %:

The Case Acceptance % is the rate in which patients are moving forward with diagnosed hygiene care. If this number is low, it’s a signal that the practice isn’t effectively communicating the value of the care they’re recommending. With clear communication, great tools, and a team approach to case acceptance, this can rise quickly.

*Range in the Hygiene Case Acceptance % is primarily due to patient communication and education. When patients understand their risks and the benefits of treatment, they are far more likely to move forward with needed care.

Restorative Care

How often is restorative care being found and diagnosed in patients?

The metrics below are indications of how often the team is finding and recommending needed care to patients. The higher they are, the more confident you can be that patients are being given comprehensive oral health options in your practice.

Keep in mind, production is not the goal. The goal is to provide thorough options and education to patients so they can make the best possible decision for themselves.

Restorative Case Diagnostic %:

The role of the doctor is to find areas of concern for patients and educate them about the best way to prevent further damage and restore health.

When necessary care is missed or left out of the patient conversation, it’s a disservice to the patient and robs them of the opportunity to move forward with needed care. A higher diagnostic percentage indicates that needed care is being found and presented to patients, creating more opportunity for necessary treatment and better overall health outcomes for patient communities.

Restorative Case Acceptance %:

The case acceptance rate is the rate at which patients are moving forward with needed restorative treatment.

Range in the Case Acceptance % is primarily due to systems. With the right systems in place for diagnosis, patient communication, handoffs, and finances, patients feel more comfortable moving forward with recommended treatment. In our Case Acceptance annual workshop, we work with your team to build these complete systems in just 2 days.

Overall Production

Here's why production numbers are important:

Production is not the goal of a dental practice. The goal is to provide excellent, comprehensive care to patients, recommending the right care at the right time. The reason we look at production numbers is because those numbers measure the amount of care that is being presented and delivered to patients. Using these numbers and comparing oral health statistics, we can get a picture of how well the team is diagnosing and completing treatment.

The aim is not to over-diagnose or push patients into care they don't need, the goal is to give patients all of their options and help them move forward with needed care.

$$ Presented Per Visit:

On average, how much care is being presented to patients who come into the dental practice?

The job of the provider is to present all care that would benefit the patient’s health, educate them about why it’s important, and provide guidance and support in the decision-making process. Patients certainly don’t have to say yes to everything, but if providers aren’t sharing all options, the patient is robbed of an opportunity to improve their oral health.

Same-Day Treatment %:

Even with the best strategies for reducing cancellations and no-shows, it still happens. Treating patients the same day they’re diagnosed is a way to turn these holes in the schedule into productive time. Same-day treatment also gives patients added convenience and help to boost the case acceptance rate.

If you don’t have a system for doing treatment same day, consider adding it to your practice to accelerate performance.

*We know it's not polite to brag, but... as Dental Intel examined these statistics, they discovered that practices that work with The Team Training Institute on average produce an additional $33,000/month over the Dental Intel average practice (this adds up to an additional $400,000/year). The average doctor would need to do 13% more exams to keep up with a doctor that works with The Team Training Institute.
